Grass cutting programme, A40 and A48 dual Carriageway, Carmarthen – June/July 2009

Although grass cutting would appear at first-glance to be a relatively straight-forward task, doing it properly alongside a large stretch of busy road takes more than just a lawn mower!

Carried out from the beginning of June to mid-July, Spencer was contracted by the Carmarthenshire County Council and SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agency) to cut the grass and tend to road-side vegetation on the A40 and A48 dual carriageways west of Carmarthen, from Pont Abraham to St. Clears.

The six-week operation covered a 25-mile stretch of road and involved west and east bound verges, plus the central reservation, which meant that the total distance covered added up to 100 miles. In addition, the work included three cuts to all of the carriageway’s visibility splays, plus the removal of litter and road-side debris.

For safety reasons, the six-week process involved a ‘rolling’ single-lane road closure for a mile prior to the point where the grass-cutting and litter-picking teams were working. This traffic management scheme was carried out in conjunction with the local authorities.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this contract for the second time and to work with the County Council and SWRTA on their highway maintenance programme”, said Jonathan Davies, Director of Spencer ECA. “We had a very experienced team working on this project, as it was vitally important to do a top quality job in the most efficient way possible.”

Spencer are pleased to report that the work has gone according to plan and is on schedule to finish right on time!
