Llandysul allotment construction: April – May 2011

As part of a joint-initiative project activated by the Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion County Councils, Spencer was called upon to create an allotment on the outskirts of Llandysul in West Wales.

The project was part of a scheme that was started last year in anticipation of growing demand for allotments. It followed an announcement that highlighted a nationwide shortage of sites for amateur growers and gardeners, with people in some parts of Wales having to wait up to nine years before getting a plot.

The land on which the allotment now stands is situated next to the Llandysul by-pass – another project with which Spencer was very much involved - and replaces the allotments that were removed when this new stretch of road was constructed between 2008 and 2010.

The land initially required clearing and then spraying with herbicide, before Spencer’s team put in the drainage system and went on to install four stand pipes to service the eight 20 x 15 metre plots. A fence was then erected around the boundary of the allotment, which included a ‘Rabbit-proof’ barrier to keep out any unwanted guests.

Following this, access pathways, constructed from sub-base type one, were laid between the plots, before the ground was rotavated. The final task was to add the all-important top-soil, with Spencer using the finest quality available, laid to a depth of 200mm.

The company is proud to report that all materials used in the creation of the allotment were sourced locally. And, as usual, the job was completed on time and on budget.
